Romancing the Indian Way :

Love is an evergreen subject which never gets outdated. Thanks to this fantasy land on which many movies are being made again and again.

Apart from celibrities stories, there has been host of house hold incidents where in a rich man falls in love with a poor woman. We may call it Master-Maid relationship. If this happens to be illicit relationship, in todays terms we call it as 'Keep'. In some cases, 'Keep' is more powerful than 'Legitimate ones'. Though this 'KEEP' subject which seems to have been intentionally ignored (and prefered not to be documented), the frequency of such incidents seems to have been quiet high, since time immorial. And many empires (be it Royal or Business or political) have collapsed because of this 'Keep Business'.

Leaving alone the nature of relationship and appreciating the Romance in it, today's Hindu Newspaper has published an 'interesting' article on this subject. To spice it up, a few photographs of romantic look is also added.

Few of the interesting facts (from this newspaper article) are:

(1) "Once I was a Tannikarachi (water carrier) living in a Cheri (Slum): Now I am a Dorasani, travelling in a Coach Vandi."

(2) "Francis Day selected Madras as a suitable settlement despite it lacking a port and having the worst possible weatherall year round only because he had lost his heart to a woman who lived in San Thome."

(3) "Henry Greenhill who later became Governor 'had' a "gentlewoman" too, and fathered two children by her. The news of birth of the second child was greeted with a 300-gun salute at the Fort. ....... the womanin question was formerly 'belonging' to Mr.Day."

(4) "Thomas Parry came to Madras in 1788 and by 1794 he was married to Marry Pearce, widow of civil servant of the city.... Mrs.Parry disliked Madras and in 1806 she took her two children and left for England. ... Parry 'CONSOLED HIMSELF WITH THE LOCAL DELIGHTS'.

(5) Another woman Parry mentions in his will is "Chilli, a native". She drew Rs.5 per month from Parry's estate till her death in 1873.
