Parkinson’s Law: The pursuit of Progress

Cyril Northcote Parkinson (1909-1993) was a British naval historian who authored 60 books, with “Parkinson’s Law” published in 1957 being his best seller. Following are a few of quotes which applies universally:

1. Delay is the deadliest form of denial.
2. In politics people give you what they think you deserve and deny you what they think you want.
3. Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.
4. Expenditures rise to meet income.
5. The Law of Triviality : Time spent on any item of the agenda will be in inverse proportion to the sum involved.
6. Make the people sovereign and the poor will use the machinery of government to dispossess the rich.
7. Men enter local politics solely as a result of being unhappily married.
8. The man who is denied the opportunity of taking decisions of importance begins to regard as important the decisions he is allowed to take.
9. Perfection of planned layout is achieved only by institutions on the point of collapse.
10. When an organizational entity expands beyond 21 members, the real power will be in some smaller body.
11. The smaller the function, the greater the management.
